Ssangmun-dong — Gi-hun's Neighborhood
Ssangmun-dong

If you've watched Squid Game start to finish, you already know this place. The narrow stepped alleys, the low-rise shopfronts with their sun-faded awnings, the small convenience store on the corner — Gi-hun's home in Ssangmun-dong is one of the most recognizable settings in the whole series, and most of it isn't a set. It's an actual hillside neighborhood in northern Seoul's Dobong District, just a few minutes' walk from Line 4's Ssangmun Station.
Fans usually anchor their visit around Baegun Market, the small traditional market where Sang-woo's mother is shown selling fish. The market itself is modest — a couple of cross-streets lined with butcher stalls, banchan shops, and produce sellers who still call out to passers-by in the morning — but it's exactly the texture the show built around. Locals are used to visitors now, and a few of the shops have leaned into it with small Squid Game signage. The CU convenience store nearby, where Gi-hun shares soju and instant ramen with the old man, is a quick photo stop, and the long sloping stairways around the hill give you the alleyway shots that show up in nearly every episode.
We'd come on a weekday morning, ideally between 9 and 11, when the market is fully open but not packed. The neighborhood is residential, so be considerate: keep voices down on the side streets, don't film inside private shops without asking, and please buy something if you stop in. After walking the market, the easy follow-on is a coffee at one of the small cafés near Ssangmun Station before heading back south. If you only have time for one Squid Game spot in Seoul, this is the one — the rest of the show's locations are scattered, but Ssangmun-dong is the place that feels like the world the story is set in.
